Project: OCIO Process Improvement Requirement: Powertek worked with HUD’s OCIO over a two-year period to 1) implement improvements in HUD’s enterprise-wide Software Acquisition Capability Maturity Model (SA-CMM) process, and 2) to support HUD’s newly formed Project Management Center of Excellence to execute many of its initial key projects, including business process reengineering (BPR), technology assessments, and enterprise architecture. Results: Our work on the SA-CMM process improvement initiative resulted in this project earning one of the highest Office of Management and Budget scores for 2004 within HUD. We also received a “Meritorious Service” award from the customer. Export-Import Bank
Project: Infrastructure Support Requirement: The scope of this project includes LAN/WAN, communications, security, desktop, and applications support. The customer wanted to quickly improve service levels, develop a knowledgebase, and provide continuous improvement. Results: Due to Powertek’s customer commitment, help desk calls have dramatically decreased, including the time to close open calls. Powertek helped the customer focus on transforming its infrastructure, including consideration of server consolidation and technology improvements in order to provide better manageability and increased reliability. Project: Security Access Control and Enhancements Requirement: Powertek performed a variety of special projects involved with enhancing the capabilities of DynCorp’s distributed access control system that was designed to provide physical security across 34 locations. DynCorp required the following: custom applications to enhance the printing capabilities of the security access system so alarms could be directed to any network printer throughout the organization; creation of graphical maps that visually depict the location and status of the security access system sensors; and a customized issues tracking system to improve DynCorp’s ability to manage its issues, feature requests, and test results. Results: Powertek achieved the following: delivered the print utility software on time and budget, greatly enhancing the system’s print capabilities beyond the requirements; redesigned the entire map system to provide better visualization of the system and its status; identified a COTS issue tracking application; and implemented issue workflows specific to the needs of our customers. The result was significantly better management and reporting of issues, improved task completion response times and reduction in rework. Project: IT Support Services Requirement: As part of this requirement to provide ongoing development coordination support for the variety of systems within PIH, Powertek was tasked with a pilot program to provide similar services for HUD Office of the Chief Information Officer. Results: Within the first 30 days of this effort, Powertek's team, working closely with government program managers, scored a huge success by providing the expertise and skills to place a troubled reengineering effort for one of their major systems back on the right path. The current IT vendor was recommending a costly technical solution not in the best interests of the customer. Powertek's staff was instrumental in helping the customer avoid months of wasted time by assisting them in realizing the gaps that the IT vendor was providing. After analyzing and providing recommendations to government program officials, Powertek was praised as being on-target, mitigating numerous potential problems and setting the project on the right course.
